Who is Fletcher Henderson? Bio and Background of Fletcher Henderson

Fletcher Henderson was born on December 18, 1897, in Cuthbert, Georgia. He was an American pianist, bandleader, arranger, and composer. Henderson played a significant role in the development of big band jazz and swing music during the 1920s and 1930s. He studied chemistry at Atlanta University and later attended Columbia University in New York City. Henderson's musical career began as a pianist in various bands, including W.C. Handy's Orchestra. In 1923, he formed his own band, the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, which became one of the most influential jazz bands of the era. Henderson's band featured talented musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins, and Benny Carter. He was known for his innovative arrangements and compositions, blending elements of jazz, blues, and classical music. Henderson's band was a major force in the Harlem Renaissance and performed at popular venues like the Roseland Ballroom. Despite financial struggles and the Great Depression, Henderson continued to lead his band and record extensively. He also worked as a staff arranger for Benny Goodman's Orchestra in the 1930s.
